2008 COUNCIL SET TO MOVE ON AGGRESSIVE AGENDA

The newly elected City Council that includes five new members is poised to pursue an aggressive agenda that includes significant challenges for property rights, property values and real estate interests. Look for council to move on an agenda that includes but is not limited to 1) revisions to affordable housing programs and policies, including revisions to inclusionary zoning that requires 20 percent of new development to be permanently affordable; 2) new regulations on home expansions, the so-called pop-up and scrape-off issue; 3) infill and redevelopment will be reconsidered with an eye to limit additional housing and commercial development; 4) implementation of the Climate Action Plan that could included mandatory point of sale residential audits and retrofitting to meet stringent energy efficiency and waste stream management goals; and, 5) a series of potential new fees or taxes that could include new excise taxes, higher property taxes and an employment or head tax. BARA leaders are moving forward with plans to position our association to constructively meet these challenges in a way that protects, promotes and enhances the long-term health of the Boulder area real estate market(s) and provides leadership to assist the community to achieve its goals for economic health and sustainability. We may need your help. Stay tuned.
