DEVELOPERS FAIL TO SHOW FOR ALBERTSON’S REDEVELOPMENT
City official will go back to the drawing board following a lack of responses to a call for redevelopment of the former Albertson’s shopping center. Wal-Mart will close its store on the site once the new Wal-Mart Supercenter opens on U.S. 287. The 22.7 acre site is located on the northwest corner of South Boulder Road and South Public Road. City officials adopted a redevelopment sketch plan for the site the calls for mixed use development, a pocket park, and pedestrian oriented design. The City’s request for proposal resulted in no responses. Now, City representatives will actively seek a redevelopment partner rather than the passive RFP approach.
COUNCIL EXPECTED TO ISSUE BONDS FOR ROAD IMPROVEMENTS
City Council will decide as early as May 1 whether to ask voters to approve up to $87 million in bonds to improve roads without increasing taxes. City leaders expect sales tax revenues to continue increasing but believe it is necessary to issue bonds to get major capital projects underway in the near term. One of the targets of the bond issue is construction of roads and infrastructure to support redevelopment of the old Albertsons shopping center.
COMMISSION APPROVES SHADY ACRES REDEVELOPMENT
The Lafayette Planning Commission gave preliminary approval for the redevelopment of Shady Acres mobile home park on April 18, 2007. Redeveloping the area has long been desired by city officials. The nearly 8-acre parcel is likely to transform into missed use, three story units on the north end of the parcel along South Boulder Road east of Public Road, with a mix of residential uses to the south. The developer, Baseline Commons, LLC is also planning to create a new north to south neighborhood street splitting the property.
