VOTERS APPROVE EXEMPTION TO GROWTH LIMITS
This November, Lafayette voters said yes to exempting the 17-acre Wal-Mart property at South Boulder Road and South Public Road from city growth controls that limit residential building permits to 200 per year. That approval would allow a large scale mixed use project to move ahead on the site by removing a barrier that future developers would find onerous. Still, redevelopment of the site will likely involve as much as $6 million in city funds to attract interest; funds not now available in the city budget. When the property redevelops, city leaders want it to include a city park, townhomes, open space and civic buildings. The city owns the vacant Albertson’s in the center and will have a large voice in what site redevelopment looks like. Wal-Mart will close the store next year when it opens a new Super Center on U.S. 287.
