FRONT RANGE LANDFILL EXPANSION MOVES TOWARD APPROVAL
After nearly two years of legal maneuvering, the 122-acre expansion of Front Range Landfill in Erie appears to be headed for approval. The requested expansion would also allow the landfill to increase its height by 117 feet. On September 20, landfill owner, Republic Services presented information to the Town during a public hearing contending that the expansion meets all the requirements needed to support expansion. The 200-acre landfill is located north of Vista Ridge subdivision at 1830 Weld county Road 5. At the meeting, the appraisal firm of Hunsperger & Weston presented results of a study indicting that the expansion will have no negative effect on the values of nearby homes, sighting Vista Ridge home price increases since 2003 that compare to housing prices in the north Denver metro area. Republic Services has already agreed to a $1.8 million landscaping plan and will pay the Town $1 million in fees that will help pay for a senior/recreation center. The public hearing continued on September 27 and a final decision is slated for October 18. With approval, the landfill’s future closing date of 2028 will be extended to 2034. Erie Town staff, Weld County and state officials have already approved the expansion application.
