P & Z COMMISSION RECOMMENDS LANDFILL EXPANSION APPROVAL
Front Range Landfill expansion plans are on the Town docket for action. The Erie Planning and Zoning Commission has forwarded its recommendation for approval with conditions to the Erie Town Board for action this spring. Front Range asked approval to expand the landfill from 202 acres to 322 acres, increase the allowable height above grade to 122 feet, build a facility to convert liquid to solid waste, extend the date for closing the landfill from 2017 to 2032, relocate the entrance away from WCR 5 closer to the Vista Ridge Subdivision at Sheridan Parkway and WCR 4, and reduce the 4 per year self-inspections to one per year. The specific action requested is an amendment to an existing development agreement that does not require a zoning change, limiting the scope of the final action. With its recommendation for approval, the Planning and Zoning Commission placed nearly two dozen conditions on the expansion, suggesting the landfill only expand to the west of its original footprint, not east, and limit additional height to no more than 100 feet, deny the ability to accept liquid waste and require planting of trees and landscaping to mitigate visual impact.
OLD TOWN REVITALIZATION PLAN REVIEWED
Old Town Erie is ready for change. Erie leaders worked with the Colorado Community Revitalization Association and the Department of Local Affairs to develop a vision plan for Old Town. Recommendation include keeping the retail center focused on Briggs Street, building a library, building a band-shell as part of a cultural center, and conduct a market analysis to determine the most effective mix of businesses and retail. Officials are even considering using existing rail tracks and running a train between Old Town and Erie Commons, a recently approved nearby development that will construct 700 housing units and a mix of commercial and retail buildings. Today, while there are several restaurants and stores in Old Town, the Post Office and Town Hall draws most people to the area.
