GROWTH ISSUES DOMINATE COMPREHENSIVE PLAN UPDATE
City officials are in the middle of the first Comprehensive Plan update in 16 years and struggling to address citizen objections to proposals that would add more than 1600 homes and hundreds of thousands of square feet of commercial space to the city’s build-out. While facing increasing demands for services, city officials have fewer resources available as sales tax revenues decline. March was the eight consecutive month in which sales tax receipts declined in Louisville. A 2.5 percent decline is predicted for the year. Mayor, Chuck Sisk acknowledges that some tough choices are on the table. The proposed revision to the Comprehensive Plan divides the city into seven sub-communities and suggests various options for commercial and residential growth to promote economic development. Louisville’s current population of 19,000 residents could grow to 24,000 if the proposed changes to the comp plan are approved. Citizens objecting to the plan have suggested that growth should accommodate no more than an additional 2000 residents.
