TRUSTEES WANT VOTERS TO GIVE BACK ANNEXATION AUTHORITY
Town officials are once again considering changes to or repeal of the town’s requirement to put most annexation decisions to a public vote. Trustees are concerned that developers are going to nearby communities because of the uncertainty created by the need for an election on annexation and development. Landowners in Erie’s northern planning area can develop in unincorporated Weld County or seek annexation to Frederick to develop their property rather than face Erie voters. Various potential amendments are being discussed but many feel that the best solution is an outright repeal. On May 24, Trustees gave preliminary approval to a staff recommended proposal that would require a public vote on residential annexations of more than 100-acres with densities or more than one unit per acre. A public hearing on the issue is scheduled on June 7. Voters are likely to get their say on the issue in November.

APPLICATION EXPECTED FOR 1700-UNIT MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT
In early May, Erie’s Planning Commission gave conceptual approval to a 1700-home mixed-use development on 305-acres at the southwest corner of Leon Wurl Parkway and WCR 5. The approval will allow the developer, Village Homes, to submit a formal application. The development review process is expected to take twelve months and groundbreaking sometime later.
