JOBS AND BUILDING VACANCY DOWN IN ’04 WHILE TAX RECEIPTS CLIMB
-Surprising most observers, Longmont ended 2004 with a net loss of jobs, primarily due to the closing of Concepts Direct and the vacation of its 118,000 square foot building. 2004 ended with a net 291 jobs lost. Building vacancy at the end of 2004 was at 19.6 percent, down from the 23.2 percent vacancy at the end of 2003. On the up side, 2004 saw a 6.1 percent growth in sales tax receipts through November compared to the first 11 months of 2003. Finally, based on the results of election results in November on a proposed increase in the Boulder county open space tax, voters in Longmont showed the least support for the tax, with nearly 60 percent of voters opposing.
