RECOMMENDATION ON LANDFILL EXPANSION PUSHED TO FEBRUARY 23
-Members of the Erie Planning Commission again delayed making a recommendation to the Town board on the proposed expansion of the Front Range Landfill located just north of Vista Ridge subdivision. No recommendation will be made until February 23, at the earliest. Front Range Landfill is proposing a 122-acre expansion of the 200-acre facility and a 117-foot increase in its maximum height. Despite considerable local opposition to the expansion both the Colorado Department of Health and Weld County have approved it.
FIRST PHASE OF ERIE COMMONS APPROVED
-A decade or so from now, land contiguous to County Line Road and WCR 8 will be home to over 700 housing units and a spat of new commercial and retail buildings. Erie Town Trustee approved the first filing of the Erie Commons development on January 5, setting the stage to link Old Town Erie to its new residential neighborhoods. The first phase of the development will construct more than 185 homes and extend Briggs St. into the development. The developer also set aside more than 50-acres that will develop into a community center.
ERIE AND FREDERICK ENGAGE IN BORDER DISPUTE
-News accounts suggest that Erie acted to secure its northern border on January 4 when the Town board unanimously voted to annex a 32-acre property at the southeast corner of Colo. 52 and WCR 7 between Erie and the neighboring Town of Frederick. On January 13 Frederick officials filed a motion in Weld county court challenging Erie’s emergency annexation procedures. The motion calls for a reconsideration of the annexation that disputes Erie’s “immediate preservation of public health or safety” justification for the emergency ordinance. The annexation is contiguous with Frederick’s 725-acre Windham Hill subdivision. Windham Hill’s borders overlaps both Frederick and Erie planning area boundaries. Under the legal filing, Erie will have to respond to issues raised in the motion of reconsideration and, if Frederick is not satisfied they will have to file a lawsuit to challenge the annexation.
