TOWN OFFICIALS PLANNING FOR AGGRESSIVE GROWTH
An updated comprehensive plan designed to accommodate a population of 50,000 by 2030 is in the final stages of adoption. Current Erie population is just over 9,000. The Erie Planning Commission approved the new land use plan on Monday, November 16. It now moves to the Board of Trustees for final action in December. The Erie comprehensive Plan has not been updated since 1999 and the new plan has several important changes. One of the most noticeable is the addition of mixed use zoning that allow development of residential and non-residential uses in the same project. For example, residential units built above street level retail uses. Large commercial development is anticipated along I-25 between Colo. 7 and Colo. 52. Within the plan, maps show that a significant portion of the Townˇ¦s open space will be in the northwest corner of the planning area and north of Leon Wurl Parkway between County Line Road and WCR 3. The plan also emphasizes Old Town as a location valued by citizens that should be nurtured and preserved. As soon as the updated Comprehensive Plan is adopted, Town officials will initiate creation of an economic development plan focused on attracting commercial growth. Officials expect that the updated Comprehensive Plan will help in develop a more detailed and targeted economic plan. The economic development plan is expected to take six months to create and adopt.
