SUPER WAL-MART DEAL CONFIRMED
City officials can relax. The deal to keep Wal-Mart in Lafayette, and its vital sales tax revenue, is official. A Wal-Mart official, Keith Morris, visited Lafayette in early March to confirm that the discount giant was indeed staying. By mid-March, City officials had a letter from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. telling them that they were moving ahead with plans to build a Super Wal-Mart on the west side of U.s. 287, north of Baseline Rd. In January, Lafayette offered Wal-Mart $2.3 million in incentives to help the company purchase land for the bigger store. Lafayette chose to offer the incentives over the objections of more than 50 residents who appeared at a public hearing. Sales tax receipts from Wal-Mart account for 14% of the city tax revenue.
